Itinerary for Papua Bird of Paradise Photo Trip by Mohamad Naliko ( Monal ) / Papua Birding Tours
Day 1: Jakarta – Jayapura Airport - Nimbokrang
Your adventure commences with a morning arrival at Jayapura Airport, where you will be warmly greeted and assisted with your luggage. Following this, you will embark on a scenic drive directly to Nimbokrang, a journey that will take approximately one hour and thirty minutes. As you traverse this beautiful landscape, take in the lush surroundings and unique flora that characterize the region.
Upon your arrival in Nimbokrang, you will check in at the charming guesthouse, a cozy retreat that serves as your base for the next few days. Enjoy a delightful lunch featuring local cuisine, offering you a taste of Papua’s culinary heritage.
At 3 PM, we will set out for an exciting afternoon of birdwatching, focusing on our primary goal: spotting the elusive Common Paradise Kingfisher and the stunning Papuan Pitta. The exploration will begin with a short yet invigorating 10-minute walk from the main road to our designated hide, strategically placed for optimal viewing. As we settle in, the anticipation grows, and you’ll have the chance to observe the diverse avian life that inhabits this rich ecosystem.
We will remain in the hide until late afternoon, allowing ample time for observation and photography of our target birds and their vibrant surroundings. As the day winds down, we’ll return to the guesthouse, reflecting on the day’s experiences and encounters. Enjoy a restful overnight stay in Nimbokrang, where you can recharge for the adventures yet to come.
Day 2 Nimbokrang
Start the day earlier at 04.30 for breakfast and then we step up to the Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise hide. From the car parking area, we walk 35 minutes to hide through muddy trails. We stay there until 07.30 and move to the King Bird of Paradise Lek afterward. From Twelve-wired to King Bird of Paradise, we will walk for around 25 minutes. The road has ups and downs, with many muddy trails. We stay there until lunchtime and return to the guesthouse. The afternoon schedule will try the hide for Eastern Hooded Pitta or Papuan Pitta.
Day 3: Nimbokrang to Sentani
On our final morning in the serene beauty of Nimbokrang, we rise early at 4:30 AM to embark on an exciting breakfast adventure. We head to a prime viewing spot for the Papuan Pitta and Common Paradise Kingfisher, where the dawn chorus of birds fills the air with their enchanting melodies. This tranquil setting allows us to savor a hearty breakfast while soaking in the stunning natural surroundings.
We spend the morning engaged in birdwatching, marveling at the vibrant colors and lively behaviors of these exquisite birds, hoping for a close-up encounter. As the sun climbs higher, we break for lunch at 11:00 AM, reflecting on the morning's wonders and sharing our favorite moments.
At noon, we pack our belongings and prepare for our journey to Sentani. The ride offers us picturesque views of the lush landscapes and vibrant culture, making the transition from the rural charm of Nimbokrang to the more urban environment of Sentani an enjoyable experience.
Upon arrival in Sentani, we check into our hotel for the night. Dinner is served at the hotel's restaurant, where we can relax and share stories from our adventures while enjoying a delicious local meal. This day marks a significant transition as we bid farewell to the captivating wilderness of Nimbokrang and embrace the next phase of our journey.
Day 4: Sentani Airport – Manokwari Airport – Arfak/Maibri
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we will embark on our journey to Sentani Airport. Upon arrival at Manokwari Airport, we will board a rugged 4WD vehicle for the scenic drive to Arfak Mountain, which will take approximately two hours. As we ascend, be prepared to marvel at the lush landscapes and diverse ecosystems that characterize this beautiful region.
Once we reach the Maibri Birding Ecolodge nestled in the Arfak Mountains, we’ll have the opportunity to visit the feeding station before lunch. The trek from the main road to the hide is about a 30-minute walk, offering a chance to absorb the vibrant flora and fauna along the way. This area is renowned for its incredible avian diversity, where we may spot several species of Birds of Paradise. Look out for the stunning female Magnificent Bird of Paradise and the contrasting colors of the male and female Black-billed Sicklebill, the dainty female Lesser Bird of Paradise, the exquisite female Vogelkop Superb Bird of Paradise, and if luck is on our side, the elusive Greenback Robin might make an appearance.
At around 11:30 AM, after our exciting birdwatching session, we will return to the guesthouse for a well-deserved lunch. After refueling, we will venture out again at 1:30 PM towards the hide of the Magnificent Bird of Paradise. The walk from the main road will take approximately 20 minutes, leading us toward one of the most breathtaking birdwatching experiences. We will spend the afternoon there until 5:00 PM, immersed in the beauty of nature before heading back to the guesthouse for dinner and a restful evening.

Day 5: Maibri Birding Ecolodge, Arfak Mountains
On the fifth day, our day begins early with breakfast served at 5:00 AM. By 5:30 AM, we will set off toward the Western Parotia hide, which requires a fulfilling trek of approximately 20 to 30 minutes from the main road. The early morning hours are magical for birdwatching, providing an extraordinary opportunity to observe the vibrant wildlife as they awaken.
Around 11:00 AM, we will return to the guesthouse for lunch, sharing our morning's highlights and rejuvenating before the afternoon activities. At 1:30 PM, we will embark on another excursion to the hide of the Magnificent Bird of Paradise, which is also about a 20-minute walk from the main road. The anticipation of encountering these spectacular birds adds excitement to our journey.
After a fulfilling afternoon of observation, we will make our way back to the Maibri Birding Ecolodge by 5:00 PM for dinner. As the sun sets behind the mountains, we can reflect on the incredible experiences of the day and spend a peaceful night in this haven of nature.
Day 6: Maibri Birding Ecolodge, Arfak Mountains
The day began early, as it will for the duration of our stay here, with breakfast served promptly at 5:00 AM. By 5:30 AM, we set off towards the birding hide, our hearts set on seeing the elusive Superb Bird of Paradise. The trail, a mix of gently sloping paths and rugged terrain, took us about 30 minutes to navigate, offering a stunning, serene environment filled with the sounds of nature that heightened our anticipation.
Once in the hide, we settled in for what would be a long but rewarding wait, occupying ourselves with the subtle beauty of our surroundings while keeping a vigilant eye for any movement. We remained patient until around 11:00 AM, savoring sparkling moments of hope as the chorus of birds filled the air. After hours of anticipation, we made our way back to the guesthouse for a well-deserved lunch, recounting our morning experiences and relishing the delicious local cuisine. The afternoon schedule held more opportunities for adventure and exploration, which we eagerly anticipated.
Day 7: Maibri Birding Ecolodge, Arfak Mountains
On the seventh day, after another early breakfast, our focus shifted to observing the fascinating Masked Bowerbird. Known for its intricate courtship displays and elaborate bowers, this species presents a unique challenge to spot, making our upcoming expedition exciting. We planned to spend the morning searching for this remarkable bird until lunchtime, driven by the hope of witnessing its intricate behaviors.
After lunch, we would be given the freedom to choose which hide to visit one last time, allowing us to immerse ourselves further in the search for these captivating birds.
Throughout our time in the Arfak Mountains, we were fortunate to observe a variety of incredible species listed among the regional avifauna. Our wish list included sightings of the Western Parotia, Magnificent Bird of Paradise, and, of course, the fabled Superb Bird of Paradise—although success often depended on our patient waiting in the hides, as the birds show no set timetable for their appearances.
We were also on the lookout for the elusive Black-billed Sicklebill and Vogelkop Bowerbird, with the hope of capturing images of the rare Feline-Owlet Nightjar or the Mountain Nightjar, as well as the stunning Green-backed Robin. Each day spent here is a thrilling adventure, filled with the promise of nature’s wonders waiting just beyond our reach.
Day 8: Maibri Birding Ecolodge, Arfak Mountains - Manokwari
Today marks our final morning waking up at 5:00 AM in the breathtaking Arfak Mountains. We will embark on a quest to observe the spectacular Bird of Paradise, a sight that is sure to leave us in awe. This enchanting bird is renowned for its vibrant colors and intricate courtship displays, offering an unforgettable experience for avid birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
After our morning birding session, we will return to the guesthouse by 11:00 AM for a well-deserved lunch. We’ll take some time to refresh and prepare for our journey back to Manokwari. This evening, we will check into a local hotel for an overnight stay, resting up for our upcoming flight to Sorong.
Day 9: Manokwari – Sorong - Waigeo
Our travel day begins with a flight from Manokwari to Sorong, scheduled to leave between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM. The flight duration is approximately 55 to 60 minutes, allowing us magnificent aerial views of the surrounding islands and rolling waves below. Upon arrival in Sorong, we will enjoy lunch at the Swiss Bel Hotel, where we can savor local flavors and recharge for the rest of the day.
Following lunch, we will embark on an exciting boat journey at 2 PM. Aboard an express boat, we will sail for around two hours, taking in the stunning coastal scenery as we head towards Waigeo/Waisai Island. Once we arrive at Waigeo Island, a short transfer will take us to our resort, where we’ll spend the next three nights immersed in nature's splendor. The drive from the harbor to the resort typically takes about 30 minutes by car, offering glimpses of the island's lush landscapes.
In the afternoon, we can explore the vicinity of the resort and go birding around the village, keeping an eye out for various avian species that call this tropical paradise home.

Day 10: Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise Adventure in Waigeo
Today, we embark on an exciting journey to the island of Waigeo, which is renowned for its rich biodiversity and several endemic species that cannot be found on the mainland. Our primary focus will be the stunning Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise, often celebrated as one of the most spectacular birds in the world due to its vibrant colors and extraordinary courtship displays.
To enhance our observation and photography opportunities, we will utilize specially constructed hides strategically placed near the bird's display grounds. This will allow us to witness the males in their full glory, engaging in intricate displays and captivating calls to attract potential mates. The best time for viewing these remarkable birds is during the early morning hours, from 5:45 AM to 8:00 AM, when they are most active.
After an exhilarating morning of birdwatching, we will break for lunch at the resort, where we can recharge and share our experiences. In the late afternoon, we will continue our exploration along the roadside, looking for other endemic bird species, such as the Lesser Bird-of-Paradise and the Red Naped Trogon. Keep your cameras ready, as Waigeo promises a wealth of avian treasures waiting to be discovered!
Day 11: Red Bird of Paradise in Waigeo
On Day 11, our adventure begins bright and early with breakfast scheduled for 4:30 AM. We will depart promptly at 5 AM for a 30-minute drive through the stunning landscapes of Waigeo. Once we arrive, we will embark on a 15-minute walk to the bird hide, a serene spot ideal for birdwatching. The best time to observe and photograph the Red Bird of Paradise, known for its vibrant plumage and captivating courtship displays, is from 6 AM to 7:30 AM when they are most active.
Moreover, Waigeo is home to a plethora of unique avian species. Aside from the Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson's Bird of Paradise, we may be fortunate enough to capture images of the elusive Beach Kingfisher, the striking Yellow-billed Kingfisher, and the charming Rufous-bellied Kookaburra. Keep your eyes peeled for the Hook-billed Kingfisher, Palm Cockatoo, and the enchanting Eclectus Parrots as well. We might also encounter the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Raja Ampat Pitohui, Golden Monarch, Frilled Monarch, Blyth’s Hornbill, Papuan Frogmouth, Marble Frogmouth, and Papuan Boobook. Each moment spent in this rich biodiversity is sure to be filled with excitement and discovery.
Day 12: Waigeo – Sorong
On Day 12, we will have the morning free to continue our search for endemic birds along the roadside. The early hours are often prime for spotting additional species that inhabit this lush region. After a few hours of birdwatching, we will return to the resort for lunch, where we can reflect on the incredible sights we've encountered.
By 1 PM, we need to make our way to the harbor to catch a public express boat back to Sorong. This journey will provide a chance to relax and enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding waters and islands. After arriving in Sorong, our day concludes with an overnight stay at the Swiss-Bel Hotel, where we can unwind and recharge for the exciting adventures that await us ahead.
Day 13: Sorong to Jakarta
As your incredible journey comes to a close, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, taking in the serene views one last time. Following breakfast, we will prepare for your onward travel. A transfer will be arranged for you at 6 AM to the airport, where you'll catch your flight to Jakarta, marking the end of this memorable trip.
Please keep in mind that during your stays at Maibri Birding Ecolodge Arfak and Nimbokrang Lodge, accommodation will be in a twin-share format as well, due to the limited room availability at these lodges. The cost for this experience is expressed in US dollars 4.550 per person if 6 people participants, which is based on twin-sharing accommodations - meaning that the price listed is for two guests sharing one room. Please note that for individuals wishing for private accommodation, there is a single supplement fee of US$ 690.
